5 Benefits of an Awning During the Winter

Winter is here and there’s nothing like a good awning to keep the chilly air at bay.

Whether you have a new home or want to add value to your existing property, an awning can provide much-needed weather protection and extra style.

First Things First, CanAwningsbe Used in Winter?

Awnings can be used all year round. Just make sure they are not left extended during high winds, heavy rain rain, and heavy snow that you will often receive during UK winters.

We recommend that your awnings are kept reeled in, when NOT IN USE during the Winter when there is uncertainty about the weather and to reduce the risk of any damage. If your awning is accidentally left out during bad weather in the wintertime, then any debris or water/snow MUST be removed to avoid it from becoming damaged.

You can, of course, still use your awnings in the winter when the weather is clear! If you are lucky enough to own a fire pit, our awnings are perfect for giving your patio those cosy feelings.

Now, let’s get into the benefits of an awning during Winter:

1. Protection from the Weather

The first and most obvious benefit of an awning is to protect you from the elements. When you have one installed, it will keep you out of the rain and snow, enabling you to enjoy your backyard or patio without having to worry about being cold and wet.

It also keeps you warm by blocking strong winds and reducing the amount of cold air entering your home. All these things are important to consider during the winter months when temperatures drop significantly between day and night.

All our awnings at Fraser James Blinds are weather-resistant, which means that our awnings cannot be classified as waterproof since they can only sustain light rainfall and may become damaged if heavy rainfall hits.

But let’s be honest, none of us are diving outside to enjoy the heavy rainfall, are we? Your awnings enjoy that as much as you so take care to ensure your awnings do not sustain damage during the nasty weather!

Tip: During the winter months, it’s best not to leave your awning out when you are not using it. If possible, keep it retracted in the casing to keep it protected from the wind and rain. Weinor’s awning cassettes are strong and durable so they will keep your awning safe and sound all winter.

2. An Awning Lets You Enjoy those Cooler Evenings

You’re probably thinking that the winter months are a time to stay indoors and snuggle up on your couch. And while this is absolutely true, an awning can help you enjoy your outdoor space whilst staying as warm as possible.

Winter evenings can be just as enjoyable outside as summer evenings can be. Whereas in summer, you may choose a refreshing glass of cool water, in Winter, there is no better feeling than taking a hot chocolate out into the cool evening air.

If you are lucky enough to have garden furniture situated underneath your awning, the awning will allow you to make the most of your outdoor space no matter the time (or temperature).

Maybe you want to sit outside in Winter; however you are not a fan of the colder temperature, this makes you an ideal candidate to try adding a heater to your awning to take the edge off that chill.

3. Awning Accessories offer Warmth and Ambience

Lighting and heating are great ways to add warmth and ambience to your outdoor space. Lighting can be used to create a cosy atmosphere, while heating will keep you warm in cold weather.

Our awnings can be outfitted with many useful and attractive additional accessories. Our range of accessories for awnings includes:

  • Wind sensors – offering automated reactions to changing wind conditions.
  • Heating – to enhance the comfort of your patio area when there’s a chill in the air.
  • Lighting – for evening or night-time gatherings.
  • Valances – adding extra visual appeal to your patio.

4. Awnings are an Extension of your Home

An awning also acts as an extension of your home all year round, and it can be used whether the weather is nice or not and can be neatly stored away on the side of the house.

By having the opportunity to customise your awning, it allows you to choose the correct shade that will work well with the colour of your house and any existing interior or exterior décor.

By customising your awning, you can ensure that it has the required measurements to fit on the side of your house without being too big or too small.

Bonus, installing a new retractable awning will automatically increase the value of your home since it creates a space that did not previously exist. Magic!

5. Awnings are Easy to Care For (Even in the Winter!)

An awning is easy to care for, even in the winter, and they require little effort to maintain as long as they are not exposed to extreme weather.

You can keep your awning looking new by cleaning it with mild soap and water or a special cleaner designed for use on fabric. You can also use this same solution to clean the window frames if they are dirty! Check out our Awnings Care and Maintenance Guide for more information.
